our principal

Principal Sereida Rodriguez-Guerra took the helm at PS 84 in the middle of the 2009-10 school year.

Raised in the Williamsburg community, she earned a B.A. in Elementary Education and Teaching from Hunter College, and later a M.A. degree in Bilingual and Multilingual Education from the City University of New York City College.

Principal Rodriguez-Guerra started her career as a teacher in the Bronx at PS 257, which was offering a cutting-edge curriculum at the time. Under the tutelage of her mentor James Quail, an expert and innovator in the field, Principal Rodriguez-Guerra thrived as an early childhood teacher and later, as a guided reading specialist.

She then returned to her roots in Brooklyn to teach at the well-regarded PS 250. She worked as a reading specialist/staff developer and then became the Assistant Principal. While there, she was offered a principal seat at PS 84.

When I was approached about 84, I wasn’t thinking about becoming a principal. What attracted me to the position were the endless possibilities that existed at a school in my community that had gone through so much. I felt it was my place to do something.

A public school parent herself—she has two children who attended PS 84—and with over 20 years’ experience, Principal Rodriguez-Guerra has worked with her school team and PTA to turn PS 84 around.

Ms. Rodriguez is a true believer in merging the traditional with the progressive approach to education and values opportunities to collaborate and partner with others. The school is flourishing thanks to different curriculum offerings, a variety of community partnerships, and a Greenhouse Classroom that offers students a rich and diverse learning experience.
